Revamp your Salads with these new Dressings!

I rarely buy salad dressing anymore.

First of all, the salad dressing aisle in the store is quite intimidating. There is a plethora of options— ranch, Italian, blue cheese, Thousand Island; and then when you decide which kind you want, the low- fat claims on the front of the bottle are even more confusing. Most of the time, the absence of fat is compensated for by adding more sugar.

And then there is the ingredients list, which can be almost a mile long and full of preservatives that are hard to pronounce.  I also find that salad dressing is just plain expensive, and can be quite wasteful if you don’t use up the bottles by their expiration date.

So, I have been making my own. It’s easy, and most of them are made with ingredients that I already have on hand.  In fact, you can basically create your own vinaigrette with two parts oil to one part vinegar, and whatever binder or emulsifier you want— mustard, honey, and mayonnaise are commonly used.

Here are some great salad dressing ideas and recipes that are easy to make and absolutely delicious. You will never feel the need to buy salad dressing after you try these!

Okay, maybe you’re a diehard ranch fan, and can’t imagine never buying it again. But put aside your misgivings for a moment and try this recipe before you buy your next bottle! This recipe can be found at “A Teaspoon of Happiness,” and it originally calls for 3/4 cup of sour cream and 3/4 cup of mayonnaise, but if you are trying to cut unnecessary fat out of your diet, it can be made with plain non- fat Greek yogurt instead, without sacrificing any flavor!

  • 1 small bunch of fresh parsley
  • 1 clove garlic

  • 1/2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 1/4 cup milk

Directions:

  1. Place all ingredients in a blender and puree until smooth.
  2. Continue to add olive oil 1 tbsp. at a time if necessary to create a smooth finish.
